Knife crime?

what is everyones explanation to why knife and gun crime is getting so bad in the UK? (American opinions accepted) I read something about that 14 year old in my home city of London and as a teen and proud of where i come from it saddens me that my little brother or male friends cannot walk around the city without being mugged.
