What motivated Adolf Hitler to become the tyrant he is known as?

The horrible deal that Germany got after WWI. The Versailles Treaty was mostly about revenge against the losers. (Granted, that usually happens after wars, but the Versailles Treaty was especially vicious.) It screwed up Germany so much that they were willing to grant power to a fascist racist psycho like Hitler.
